This is Venice’s world famous Rialto Bridge, which spans the Grand Canale. It is a covered bridge with shops on both sides of the main pathway. Construction on the bridge was started in 1588 and completed in 1591.
This was a major port in the ancient world. Merchant ships came here from all over the known world to sell their goods. Before this stone incarnation of the bridge, there was a wooden bridge. Even before that, a bridge made of boats—spanning the canal.
