Temple of Jupiter

Pompeii

This is what remains of the once great temple dedicated to the Roman god Jupiter in the ancient city of Pompeii. Jupiter was considered the leader of all the gods and ruled with his bolts of lightning.

According to pompeiionline.net, the Temple of Jupiter was damaged by the earthquake that struck Pompeii in 62 A.D.  It was never fully repaired before it, like the rest of the ill-fated town, was buried under fifteen feet of Vesuvius’ ash.
