Cambodian Relief

on

CambodianReliefI believe this is a relief sculpture of the Hindu goddess Shiva. This particular carving is a part of the Bayon Temple complex in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Bayon is the central temple in the much larger Angkor Thom complex (the largest of the walled complex in the Angkor area). The enormous scale of the Angkor Wat temple is breathtaking, but the details that were painstakingly etched into many of the temples’ stones leaves one in awe and wonder at the limitless ambitions of man. These reliefs that are in the thousands in the Angkor area have withstood the weathering effects of this humid climate relatively well for almost 900 years.

A small point of clarification. Shiva is a god. If this image is of a goddess, it may be of Kali, consort of Shiva.
