This is known as the Skyrocket flower. It’s scientific name is Scarlet Gilia and it grows all over the western United States. It can be found in desert canyons, mountain meadows, and subalpine boulder fields. According to the United States Department of Agriculture website, the plant was first discovered by western civilization during Lewis and Clark’s famous expedition through the Louisiana purchase on their way to the Pacific Ocean. I found this specific flower while my wife and I were visiting Mesa Verde National Park during the late Spring time.
