This is a view out the window of the world’s highest cog railway as we approach the top of Pikes Peak in Colorado. According to colorado.com, the Pikes Peak Cog Railway has been taking passengers up “America’s Mountain” since 1891.
The popularity of Pikes Peak in my opinion is a great example of amazing advertising. This isn’t the tallest mountain in America; it isn’t even the tallest in the state—far from it. It is the 31st highest peak in the state and yet it is arguably the most famous mountain in the United States. I attribute this to amazing advertising and accessibility.
It inspired one of America’s most patriotic songs, “America the Beautiful.” It is also the site for one of racing’s most prestigious events (and second oldest car race), the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
