The rock ptarmigan is well adapted to blend into its environment regardless of the season. In the summer, its feathers are brown and black to blend into the high alpine rocky landscape, and in the winter they change to solid white. I took this image in the Autumn right after the first snow fall. This bird had already started to take on its winter coat.
If you are lucky enough to spot one of these creatures, they are really funny to watch slowly make their way along their path. They run like chickens but this one, and a few of his companions, walked very slowly as to not draw attention to themselves, even though I was no more than a foot away from them at times. They also make really funny noises.
