I found this colorful Collared Lizard while hiking in Colorado National Monument. I’ve spotted this species a few times and they always seem as interested in me as I am in them. When approached, most other species of lizards will scurry away quickly, but this lizard stands his ground almost daring me to encroach on his territory. They are one of the biggest lizards for the area, measuring about a foot in length. There are big predators in this area too, especially hawks, so I am surprised that they seem so bold… maybe that is why I don’t see them more often.
