At 13,911′ high, Mount Meeker is only surpassed by Longs Peak within the boundaries of Rocky Mountain National Park. This massive mountain stands like a sentinel watching over the southeastern side of the park. In fact, if you approach the park on Highway 7 coming from Lyons, this peak dominates the sky line for most of the drive along the eastern edge of the park. If you want to enjoy the vantage point pictured above than make sure you are prepared for the 9-mile round trip hike with 2,000′ of elevation gain up to the Sandbeach Lake from the Wild Basin section of the park. This is an excellent way to spend a midsummer’s day in the wilderness.
