This tiny little beetle is a part of the Crop Beetle family and is known as the Colorado Potato Beetle, or more simply the Potato Bug. According to pestproducts.com, it can actually be found in much of the Continental United States even as far away as Florida, but it was discovered in the Rocky Mountains in 1811. The potato part of its name wasn’t added until it was found to be responsible in 1859 for destroying much of Nebraska’s starchy crop. It’s hard to believe a bug about 3/8″ in length could be responsible for decimating an entire state’s crop.
