I’m not sure which I find more fascinating, the guy whose job it is to jump daily off of this perfectly good bridge into shallow water filled with dangerous debris or the crowd that watches this for entertainment. After-all, there are only two outcomes; he lives or he dies a horrific death in front of everyone. Still, I find myself not only watching, but snapping a bunch of photos and at the same time contemplating what it would be like to jump myself. We are strange creatures… maybe it is just men. I don’t hear of many women with the same predilection to fling themselves off of things.
To be as transparent as possible, I along with a few friends in fact had jumped off a railroad bridge about 2 days earlier while exploring the countryside outside the town of Čapljina, Bosnia & Herzegovina. True, this individual was jumping off the historic Stari Most (“old bridge”) in Mostar, Bosnia and at 79′ it is about four times as high as the bridge I jumped off of. The water is also filled with debris from the original bridge that was destroyed in 1993 during the Bosnian War, adding to the danger in his jump. Still, I couldn’t help but feel the parallels. In the end I thought it best to leave this one to the professionals and grabbed a beer, after-all this is a tradition that has been going on for about 450 years in Mostar. They probably know what they are doing by now.
