When you see a big African cat in the zoo, you really don’t get a sense for how these creatures blend into their environment. When you catch a glimpse of them passing through the tall grass in Tanzania, it is an otherworldly experience.

This cheetah was passing at a slow trot and yet he was still hard to keep a visual lock on as he blended into the grass blowing in a moderate wind. There were a couple of spots where I was able to get a few photos and then he was gone. A ghost in broad daylight. It is no wonder cheetahs are apex predators in their environment and that so many of Africa’s other animals have such a keen sense of smell that they rely on far more than their eye sight.
