There is nothing as serene as waking up in your tent with the sound of a cascading stream of water filling the air. Upper Cataract Lake is one of those perfect backpacking destinations in Colorado. It’s a large body of water for this altitude, surrounded by high snowy peaks on three sides, and has a cascading waterfall coming off this natural dam that drops a couple hundred of feet before emptying into another lake about a quarter of a mile away. The lake is lined with perfect camping spots, none better than a large one next to the lake runoff. I think I could spend weeks camped out in this majestic spot and never get tired of the beauty and quiet stillness of this place.
