Colorado’s Swift Fox

Swift Fox

The Swift Fox is a very small canid, only reaching about 16″ high. For their size they can move very fast at nearly 30 MPH, thus their speedy name. They are nocturnal creatures who hunt small mammals like prairie dogs, mice, squirrels, and rabbits on the Great Plains of the United States. During the day they spend their time sleeping in their underground dens, which is very unusual for a canid. I found this one at the Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center. He came out of his den just before sunset to scope out the area. They are beautiful creatures.
