I took this image last month before watching the 4th of July fireworks at Memorial Park in Colorado Springs. I was trying to capture the gorgeous Colorado sunset, but this little girl was having way too much fun splashing around and throwing mud into the lake to allow me a clear shot. In the back of my mind I was thinking, “Wow, that is nasty. That dirt is basically flinging bird poop.” I think as adults we miss the simple joys in life because of our knowledge of the world. This little girl was having a blast splashing around in a lake that thousands of others who had gathered here wouldn’t even think of entering because of the mud, poop, and the consequence of being cold and wet. Are we missing out on the joys of this kind of freedom? I don’t know, but I do know that a lot of people out there live sheltered lives in fear. I just wonder if we are so cautious of everything that can hurt us that we ever truly live or if we are just existing. I say let freedom ring and embrace the uncertainties of life. We only get a chance to live once.
