Dry Falls

I found this dried up waterfall etched in the vertical walls along the hike known as The Narrows in Zion National Park. This remnant of a waterfall is close to the top of the slot canyon, a few miles into the 16 mile journey. Want more info on the hike? Check out my in-depth guide, A…

Big Red Dahlia

This big red flower with a seemingly unlimited number of petals is known as a Dahlia flower. Seriously, these things are huge—about a 1′ in diameter. The vibrancy of the petals is almost overwhelming. They are stunning flowers… probably the reason why they are the national flower of Mexico.

Arches Evening Primrose

It’s moments like these where you realize how many things we pass by so quickly in life. This Evening Primrose flower, albeit very pretty, probably wouldn’t have stood out in a field of flowers. But, place it in the desert, surrounded by gigantic rock structures, and the perspective changes. This delicate Evening Primrose gives a…

Ngauruhoe

This other worldly landscape is the Ngauruhoe Volcano in New Zealand. From this vantage point you can see why the desolate location was chosen to represent Mordor in the Lord of the Rings movies. I think it is something more akin to Mars if not for the blue sky… There fixed that in Photoshop. 🙂

Ice Plant Flower

This beautiful flower is actually called the Ice Plant flower. So called not because they thrive in cold environments, but rather the way they shimmer like ice. They actually grow well in dry areas, making them perfect for adding color to rock gardens. I found this one in Pueblo, Colorado, which has a dry climate.

Providential Sky

Welcome to June everyone! We made it…. to the hot months. I don’t know about you, but it seems like it should still be January. I’m not sure where the heck the last few months have gone. I’m fairly certain I wasn’t abducted by aliens and then returned just now, but I can’t be for…

Milford Moss

New Zealand is known to be one of greenest places on the planet. I don’t mean it is environmentally friendly, although that is probably true too, but a literal natural green. Most of its notoriety for it greenishness is due to its lush rolling green hills (you know, Hobbiton—Lord of the Rings). That is the…

Chamaenerion Angustifolium

This is the Chamaenerion Angustifolium… if you know how to pronounce that correctly, I am impressed. The more common name is Fireweed flower. These flowers are known as fireweeds not because of their fiery red stem, but because they are often the first plant to repopulate an area after a forest fire. I found this one on…

Carved Deep

The Grand Canyon—as seen from the eastern part of the park. Growing up I had an image in my head of Grand Canyon National Park being this massive, rugged, deep canyon. All of this is true, but when I finally got to visit I was amazed at how the canyon appears with little warning. A…
