Ancient Path into the Unknown

When Jennifer and I went to China our top priority was to see The Great Wall in its restored state as well as the ruins of this once great wonder. When we arrived on the unrestored section of the Wall known as Jiankou we were greeted with this view. An uncertain ancient path into the…

Monument in the Sky

This is Monument Rock for which the town of Monument, Colorado derives its name. There are many trails in and around the rock formation, but the main hiking trail is known as Monument Loop and is a fairly easy 2.5 mile stroll. The trail is located in the area of the Pike National Forest known as the…

Lush Path

This is the lush and rugged Routeburn Track in New Zealand. Specifically this is on the Milford side of the “Great Walk” through the dense Southern Beech trees. I love trails like this. A rocky narrow trail that is well-worn and yet nature encroaches on all sides. I am a naturalist when it comes to my…

Clear Creek Cascade

This is the Clear Creek flowing down from Clear Lake in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. Some might call this a waterfall, but technically the water never falls. It cascades down the large rock face. This viewpoint can be accessed by a short side excursion from the Ice Lake Basin trail. It is located about a third of…

Goat Gang

A gang of mountain goats stared me down as I was summiting Quandary Peak in Colorado. These creatures are amazing and majestic animals that have the ability to not only survive but thrive in environments that would quickly kill humans.

An Icy Memory

My wife and I have had many great adventures over this past year, but looking back, our trip to the Ice Lake Basin was perhaps my favorite. It rained, thundered, and hailed  on us, but it added to the adventure. The scenery was pretty good too.

Beautiful Basin

This is the remote Lower Ice Lake Basin in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. This is my favorite backcountry camping spot… so far. My wife and I camped about 50′ from where I took this photo. You see one waterfall coming down from Ice Lake, but there are four other waterfalls that all come off…

Delicate Arch

This rock formation is known as Delicate Arch, located inside Utah’s Arches National Park. If you recognize the image, but aren’t sure where you have seen it, it’s on Utah’s license plate. The 60′ tall free-standing Delicate Arch can be found at the end of a 3-mile trail that is defined as moderate. If you aren’t adjusted to…
